Frozen shoulder is precisely what the name implies: when your shoulder is nearly frozen. Also known as adhesive capsulitis, this condition is when the individual is experiencing a blend of pain, inability to properly move, or the immense stiffness of the shoulder. It often is a result of an individual who has experienced an injury or overused the shoulder. Additionally, those who have diabetes or suffered from a stroke are also at risk of frozen shoulder.

At the core, this condition occurs when tissue in the targeted area start to become stiffer and scar tissue begins to populate. As a result, the shoulder joint experiences intense discomfort and the inability to properly move. Do keep in mind that this problem occurs over many years. It’s slow and periodic, which can make it challenging for patients to know whether or not to get diagnosed. Rather than just not doing anything, it’s worth getting checked so you can go on with your normal life.

Causes of Frozen Shoulder

Frozen Shoulder is most often an onset of an individual who has undergone a significant injury to the shoulder, overuse of the tissues and joint, and/or a stroke or diabetes. Many of these problems can lead to the inability or a decrease in the range of motion with the shoulder. This can cause discomfort and pain and eventually lead to a frozen shoulder. Most often, this condition occurs in more women than men, and also those ranging between 40-70 years old.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder

Generally, frozen shoulder develops in three stages over a course of time. Each stage may last for a few months. The three stages are:-

  • Freezing stage – In this stage, one will experience pain with the slightest of movement of the shoulder. In addition, the range of motion of the shoulder will start being limited.
  • Frozen stage – This stage entails the diminishing of the pain. The shoulder, however, becomes stiffer, which makes using it even more difficult.
  • Thawing stage – During this stage, the range of motion of one’s shoulder begins to improve.

Some of the patients of frozen shoulder may experience worse pain at night.

Who’s At Ask of Frozen Shoulder

Anatomically, the shoulder joint is made up of bones, ligaments, and tendons that are encased in a capsule of connective tissue. If this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, the movement of the shoulder will be restricted and this results in frozen shoulder. Although doctors are not sure as to what causes such thickening and tightening of the capsule, they believe that either people with diabetes or those who have recently had their shoulder immobilized for a long period (such as after surgery or an arm fracture) are more likely to suffer from this condition.

The following factors tend to increase the risk of developing frozen shoulder:-

  • Age and gender

As far as age is concerned, frozen shoulder generally develops in people above 40 years of age. As for the gender, women are especially prone to it. Combining the two, it could be said that people above 40, especially women, are at an increased risk of developing frozen shoulder.

  • Reduced mobility

Those who have encountered immobility of the shoulder for extended periods in their lives are at higher risk of developing frozen shoulder.

Frozen Shoulder Diagnosis

During a physical exam, if the professional is documenting the inability to properly move the shoulder joint, they may suggest or begin drawing conclusions leading to frozen shoulder.  In order to have an accurate diagnosis, a typical exam may cause some pressure on the targeted area. If a doctor believes the problem may not be a frozen shoulder, they may suggest undergoing an X-ray. By focusing and targeting the core problem, at Botti Chiropractic & Wellness, we can provide a permanent solution.

Prevention

Frozen shoulder is not something that you should wait to occur. In fact, this is a condition that can be prevented. Through maintaining a positive range of motion with your shoulder with daily exercises, stretching, or even different forms of therapy, you can keep the targeted area active. We will say that in some cases, frozen shoulder does not have a distinct cause. Through incorporating therapy and stretching, it can help to heal the shoulder and join without having to undergo potential surgery or other invasive treatments.
