At Botti Chiropractic & Wellnesschiropractor in Frankfort, one of the most common conditions that we treat is tendonitis. For those who might not know, a tendon is a thick cord in the human body that connects the muscles to the bones. Tendonitis occurs when these tendons are inflamed and/or irritated. Should you be experiencing any discomfort in the tendon, let Frankfort Chiropractor, Dr. Botti share some possible treatment options.

Causes of Tendonitis

So, what causes tendonitis? In most cases, it’s a result of repetitive actions and impacts on an area – or a sudden injury. The most common activities that can cause this condition include, but not limited to, baseball, golfing, tennis, raking, and even carpentry. By failing to stretch or exercise prior to performing many of the above activities, it can lead to an increased risk.

Here are a few other common risk factors:

  • Poorly placed or abnormal joint or bone: If there is a length difference in the legs or health conditions like arthritis, can cause stress on soft tissues, leading to tendonitis.
  • Stress on the human body can significantly increase the risk of the development of tendonitis in the body. Stress triggers include conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, and even gout.
  • By overusing tendons in a short period of time, tendons can quickly become inflamed. This can be the reasoning behind why people who exercise vigorously on the weekends tend to get tendonitis.
  • This condition can also be triggered by an infection, especially those from an animal’s bite (dog or cat).

Who Is at Risk?

While anyone can develop tendonitis, it typically occurs in those above the age of 40. This can be attributed to the tendons losing their elasticity, causing them to be more prone to stress and tears.

Which Parts Are Affected?

This condition can occur anywhere in the human body where tendons are connecting bone and muscle. Some of the most common locations include the shoulder, knee, hip, and elbow.

Symptoms of Tendonitis

Evidently, the most common sign of tendonitis is discomfort and pain. The pain can either be immense, sudden and immediate if calcium deposits are present, or gradual over-time,

The most common symptom is pain. There is usually a pain in the affected area and it might be sudden, build up and be severe especially if there are calcium deposits in the area. Another common symptom of tendonitis is frozen shoulder, which impacts one’s range of motion.

Tendonitis Prevention

Tendonitis is a condition that can be avoided. The best way to do this is by starting each activity slowly and gradually build your movement and motions as you go. The logic behind this is that it will allow the human body and tendons to adjust and “warm-up”. In addition to this, if you can limit the number of repetitive motions you make, or force you apply, it can help to reduce the risk. Now, if you are experiencing any discomfort while performing a motion or activity, try to do something else. If the pain continues or reoccurs, stop performing the motion or activity until the following day.
