What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy or peripheral neuropathy are similar terms used to describe damage to either a single nerve or a group of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. Mainly, peripheral neuropathy develops due to other medical disorders like diabetes or malnutrition.
The most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include a tingling sensation or numbness in the limbs (mainly fingers and toes). This numbness or tingling then usually moves up the limbs and towards the core. Generally this pain tends to be worse at night and may accompany restless leg syndrome. Initially neuropathy can start with pain and as it progresses will eventually end up as numbness, which can make patients prone to ulceration and potentially amputation in the future. Systemically, conditions such as Diabetes or prolonged use of statin drugs can result in peripheral nerve damage. Chemotherapy can also damage peripheral nerves as well. When one notices these signs or symptoms, it is important to be properly evaluated and diagnosed so that the correct treatment can be rendered.
