Carpal tunnel syndrome is the tingling, numbness, weakness and other problems that you might experience in your hand as a result of the median nerve being under pressure especially at the wrist. The median nerve and some tendons run from the forearm to the hand through a tiny space in the wrist referred to as the carpal tunnel. These nerves are responsible for the feelings and movement of the thumb and three fingers except the little finger. Since the problems emanate from the carpal tunnel, they are referred to as the carpal tunnel syndrome.
Causes Of The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve. The pressure may result from factors that reduce the size of the carpal tunnel such as swelling. Some of the elements that might cause swelling include illness such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and hypothyroidism. Swelling can also come from movement. If you make continuous hand movements especially in cases where the hands are in a lower position than the wrist, it might lead to swelling. Same wrist movements can also result in pressure on the median nerve. Pregnancy can cause swelling thus reducing the size of the carpal tunnel.
Symptoms Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The most common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include weakness, numbness, tingling and in some cases pain in the hand or fingers. There are some people who might experience pain between the elbow and the hand. Most of the symptoms are observed in the middle finger, index finger, thumb, and half of the ring finger. If you are experiencing the mentioned symptoms in all fingers apart from the little finger, there are high chances that you are dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome. This is because there is a different nerve that gives the little finger its feeling.
Most people start experiencing the symptoms at night and get relief by shaking their hand. Though this will give them short-term relief, it will not get rid of the problem, and this is where proper treatment comes in.
