Sprain And Strain
Did you know the most common injuries that impact the muscles and ligaments in the body is a sprain or strain? These both often happen most for people that are involved in sports activities, especially those requiring the individuals to run or move at different interval speeds. In addition to this, an individual may experience a sprain or strain from falling awkwardly. Let’s explore both of these conditions and how to treat them.
At the core, a sprain happens when an individual twists, tears, or overstretches the ligaments. To do this, an individual would need to exert enough force on a joint to cause the twist or tear to occur. If you did not know, a ligament is essentially the band that connects the joints and bones in the human body. In most cases that we see, sprains happen to impact the waist, knees, thumbs, and ankles; however, they can happen in different locations.
Symptoms of a sprain may include pain, bruising, or even swelling of the targeted area. Typically, individuals know that something is wrong when they can no longer put pressure on the joint. The swelling around the injured area may not occur right away either, which is important to know. Bruising, on the other hand, can appear around or away from the area, depending upon how the blood is flowing.
Unlike a sprain, a strain happens when an individual overstretches or tears the fibers in a muscle. This typically happens when someone quickly contracts their muscle or tries to perform a stretch beyond the muscle’s limits. In most cases that we see, strains happen in either the back or the leg. Now, if you are wondering if you have a strain, the most common symptoms are pain, bruising, or swelling around the area. In some cases, patients have complained of muscle spasms.
When To Seek Treatment
Given the nature of these conditions, they can be treated at-home with home remedies. However, in some cases, when the pain is too severe, it’s highly advised to see a professional. At the same time, when the joint or muscles are unable to function as normal, or it’s too painful to put weight on, it’s advised to visit a doctor as well. Now, if the symptoms do not disappear after a few days after at-home treatments, again, visiting a doctor is advised. In rare cases, there may be a bigger problem, like a fracture.
