Whiplash

Although most commonly associated with auto accidents, whiplash can refer to any cervical spine strain or sprain. In this injury, there can be damage to the intervertebral joints, discs, cervical muscles and ligaments.

Causes of Whiplash

Whiplash is mostly caused by a sudden backward or forward jerking motion of the head. In most cases, the movements happen at the same time especially because they are commonly caused by a car accident. Most whiplash patients are from car accidents especially when a car is hit from behind.

Symptoms Of Whiplash

Most patients have reported a delay of symptoms up to 24 hours after the accident or trauma. If you experience whiplash, you might develop some symptoms, usually occurring within a few days of the injury. These symptoms may include stiffness and pain in the neck, headaches, pain experienced in the shoulder or between shoulder blades, dizziness, sleep disturbances, fatigue, irritability, low back pain and numbness or pain in the hand and arm. If you are involved in an accident and notice any of the mentioned symptoms, it is important that you see a doctor immediately.

Diagnosis

Because most of the injuries involved in whiplash affect soft tissue such as muscles, ligaments, and discs, they cannot be seen through X-rays. This is why specialized tests such as MRI and CT scans are often required in the diagnosis. The doctor will also ask questions related to what you are feeling. You should provide information related to where you are feeling pain or any other symptoms that you are facing. Information about an accident or trauma is crucial in the diagnosis of whiplash. It is important that whiplash is treated as soon as possible because there might be complications. If you or anyone you know has been involved in an accident and might not be showing any signs of injury, it is important to take the necessary steps since whiplash symptoms do not show up immediately.  It is also not uncommon for whiplash patients to develop arthritis down the road as the proper steps to recuperate from this injury are never taken.

Treatment

Because of the delay of symptoms, treatment is usually delayed and starts when the symptoms start to show up. However, you can make steps that might play an important role in the prevention or reduction of symptoms. This is where chiropractic care comes in. At Botti Chiropractic & Wellness, we focus on a complete rehabilitation of the injury so that pain goes away quickly and trauma from the damage does not create more serious damage at a later point. This starts with a complete physical examination which can often find problems that aren’t identifiable even on advanced imaging.  We use chiropractic medicine, rehabilitation, exercise, and massage therapy to relieve pain and treat different conditions. Our main aim is to eliminate the obstacles that might be limiting the body’s ability to heal itself. All to often we find patients who were given muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatories by other providers. When they feel better afterwards they don’t think about it again until down the road the pain returns because the physical medicine was never performed. Our expert chiropractic care doctor is highly trained and certified to provide the highest quality care during this time and our track record has been impeccable.

If you have been involved in an accident, it is a good idea to give us a call to book an appointment whether the whiplash symptoms are showing or not.
